BE PATIENT WITH SENIORS ON THE ROAD

by

It seems like vacation drivers are everywhere this summer and in addition to all the families there are a host of “seniors” on the road as well.  Even some of us “Baby Boomers” frequently get impatient with our fellow senior citizens on the highway.  But even though more seniors are still driving than ever before (86% of Americans age 65 or older still drive); statistics indicate that older drivers are some of the safest on the road today.

Obviously, one reason is experience.  Older drivers have more experience and generally have a better grasp of their limitations and are more prone to what some call safety-consciousness driving.  All of which helps to produce the positive driving records of seniors.  And, seniors do not seem to reduce their driving activity in spite of their age (68% of drivers age 85 and over report driving five or more days a week).

Some further evidence of senior safe driving that came out of a recent report from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety . . . .

  • Nearly 90% of drivers age 65 and over reported no crashes in the last two years.
  • 90% of older drivers reported no moving violations.
  • 65% of drivers age 75 and older reported never using a cell phone while driving.

So let’s give them their due, those seniors on the road might frustrate you a little but they are generally safe drivers and we can view them as examples of our future driving experience.
