Tax Time Is Here

April 15 draws near and with that deadline many of us begin to suffer real temporary depression. If depression is an issue for you as it is for many, there are some practical ways we can deal with it. UCLA’s “Mindful Awareness Research Center has developed a 5-minute routine that is aimed at helping depression sufferers as much as medication therapies. As their name implies, the approach is based on “Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). This is what you do:
• Set a timer for 5 minutes.
• Sit with your back straight, feet on the floor and hands in your lap.
• Close your eyes or look slightly downward and jus breathe naturally.
• If your thoughts wander, say “thinking” softly in your mind then return your attention to regular breathing.
• When the timer goes off, take notice of how you feel and try to carry that feeling with you throughout the day.

This is the concept and it is supposed to produce a kind of “inner quiet” to ward off depression. Well, if it works or even helps, it is certainly better than medication – especially while you are preparing your tax return. You can get more on this at marc.ucla.edu
