Although the World Champion BBQ was over with the Houston Rodeo in March, there are still some Texas cook-offs and appetite-tempting events that might justify some interesting trip plans for this year.  Here are a few choices that may stimulate your taste buds for a little journey:

  • 1-2 (Labor Day weekend) Brady will hold the World Championship BBQ Goat Cook-Off right in the heart of goat-ranching country. There will be more than 200 teams cooking “cabrito” along Brady Creek in Richards Park along with carnival games, live music, dancing and more.  For more information see
  • 22-23 – Galveston’s Shrimp Gumbo Cook-Off as part of their annual Shrimp Festival in the historic Strand district will have over 60 cooking teams preparing a wide range of shrimp creations. In addition there will be dancing, live music and even a children’s parade.  It’s near enough for a day trip.  Go to for more information.
  • 23 Gumbo Cook-Off and Cajun Festival in Lakehills northwest of San Antonio. Information at
  • 21 in Mission the annual Fajita Cook-Off see for more on it.
